What a day! Left SF in heavy rain, turned to snow around 5500'. Hwy 88 to Kirkwood was covered in snow several inches deep in places. But once I got there, what a day! A foot of fresh powder on the mountain and no crowds--in fact, I did a couple of runs late in the day when I didn't see another person from the lift down to where the runs merge together. Had a great time learning to snowboard in deep power--a very different experience. But who cares if you fall into a foot of powder? Kirkwood during the week is a great option from the Bay Area, since you're avoiding any possible Tahoe traffic and the mountain just isn't very busy. The only downside is that when the back side is closed it really cuts the number of intermediate runs available.
