(Editor’s Notes on Northstar, California)
I have taught Private Lessons at Northstar for years. The best kids ski school in Tahoe, but not inexpensive. Also a great staff of private adult instructors as well. Northstar, now a Vail Resort is upfront about their high-end guest status. They want those who can afford the best, and that’s what they often deliver. Good beginner terrain, Fantastic Intermediate, and plenty of advanced terrain, especially if you can ski the trees, a Northstar specialty.
Some of the best grooming happens at Northstar, and if it is snowing, should be your first resort choice with slopes down in the trees protected from the wind.
Deals, Values, Tips:
You won’t find discount Northstar tickets. Your best bet is the Epic Local Pass, if you’re local, and Vail practically gives them away at the end and beginning of the season. Second best savings is to use the Internet and buy in advance and multi-days. Holidays always bring the most expensive ticket rates, and crowds. The first week of January, after the holiday rates come down and the slopes are empty.
Parking: Can be frustrating on a busy day. We NEVER get to Northstar after 8am, even on the week day. They have parking up near the resort, which fills up fast. Then you have to take the bus to and from the village, from remote parking. If hassle is not your thing, use the Special Lots, which can charge up to $40 a day, but put you right at the base of the village.
Food: Expensive as you’d expect. The best values, besides stopping at Safeway, grabbing a sandwich or three and stashing in a locker is in the Village, down the steps from Starbucks. Tacos Jalisco is a local’s best bet in Truckee, and also a bargain at Northstar for lunch and dinner.
70 trails and 4 terrain parks open with 19 lifts spinning! What an incredible early Christmas gift. Our cross country center is also open with 5k of freshly groomed trails for Nordic skiing (pedal pushers was the term I learned today) and snowshoeing. And did I mention the Fat Biking?
New at Northstar this season, fat bike rentals will be available for daily use on 100% of our groomed cross country trail system!
The extra wide, low pressure tires combined with very efficient gearing and geometry allow fat bike riders to get out and experience the peaceful beauty of our winter mountain environment that cross country skiers and snowshoers have enjoyed for years.
