Old Newsletter Blast! 2/4/16

Taste Of Spring Inbound This Weekend…

Hello Skiers and Riders!

About 45 degrees in Truckee as we finish up the newsletter. We’ve had some awesome skiing and riding in Tahoe the past two weeks. We spread it out at Squaw, Alpine Meadows, Rose, Northstar, Cali and Sugar Bowl. We’ve got CREW video below!

The big news is a change in the weather for 6-10 days. It’s looking spring-like with temps into the 50’s. This would a good time to break down and get that tune-up on skis and boards. We haven’t had a big need for sharp edges, but that will change as the groom firms up.

This week, we found perfect groom, and a lot of packed powder in the side country and through trees. What we did not find? A lot of people. Mid-week continues to rock not just for deals, but for empty slopes and close-to-the-shred-parking.

*Holiday Inbound
The biggest ski/ride holiday of the season is coming.
President’s Weekend is the weekend, beginning Friday, the 12th.
Expect it too be busy and HOLIDAY pricing will be in effect. Our
recommendation is jump into the car and catch this AMAZING weekend and midweek until Thursday.

*Ski Week
The week following President’s is Ski Week. Some holiday pricing is in effect, and it will be busy. Best price on tickets. Wow, we love the 4 and 6 pack from Squaw Alpine. That is a deal, with tons of flexibility. Plenty more, though, sliders. Scan to your favorite resort to check discount ticket pricing.

Once inside, guests are welcomed by aromas of a five-course dinner, featuring a different brewery, winery or distillery at each monthly event. *Kirkwood!
With more than 23 feet this season alone and snow nearly every day in January, now is the best time to enjoy Kirkwood’s quieter season – the holiday crowds have scattered and Kirkwood can be enjoyed in all its glory with lodging rates up to 20 percent off.

While skiers and snowboarders are enjoying the mountain to themselves, they can also partake in or watch Rahlves’ Banzai Tour, back at Kirkwood Mountain Resort for the sixth season and showcasing the most pure form of ski and snowboard racing. This year the tour will be dropping in from “CLIF Drop” off the Wall into Kirkwood’s wide open terrain where competitors will launch into Snow Snake Gully off the road aka “Down Deschutes” flying past spectators on top of Chair 11. The natural terrain at Kirkwood is the perfect fit for Banzai fun and top-to-bottom battles. www.kirkwood.com

*Scoop from St. Coop From Kirkwood!
Buenos Dias my friends,
Current temperatures @the base 21 with 21@the summit, Light E-Winds 4/5mph NWS forecast for the day: Mostly sunny, with a high near 46. Light and variable wind becoming south southwest around 5 mph in the morning. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 21. Light and variable wind.

NWS Extended: Model differences near the end of the EFP especially late Thu/Fri lower confidence in timing and any precip chances for our CWA.

Have to believe the strength of the ridge will prevail with an initial system trying to break it down on Thu. Models may also be trending Fri`s system farther N with our CWA on the Srn fringe of any precip chances…which now appear N of I-80. In the least…temperatures will be trending cooler. JHM

Great weekend ahead with sunny skies and great spring like temps…
Living the dream each and everyday my friends smile emoticon

Homewood Mountain Resort is now offering snowcat accessed backcountry skiing and snowboarding to advanced skiers and snowboarders from the top of Ellis Peak, just above the resort’s designated ski area boundary on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore.

Over 750 acres of tree runs, steeps, glades, backcountry bowls and fresh snow await just out-of-bounds at Homewood Resort. This season, groups of up to 10 skiers and riders can enjoy guided access in the backcountry with Homewood Snowcat Adventures. Participants will enjoy laps of up to 1,828 vertical feet from the top of Ellis Peak to the bottom of Old Homewood Express chairlift. After each run, a short chairlift ride takes participants and their guides back to meet the snowcat for another ride to the top of Ellis Peak, where breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe and Desolation Wilderness await, along with untracked terrain.

“The terrain accessible by snowcat just outside the resort boundary is some of the most desirable backcountry skiing and riding on the West Shore,” said Kevin Mitchell, general manager of Homewood Mountain Resort. “Thanks to the El Nino winter conditions we’re experiencing in Tahoe this season, advanced skiers and snowboarders will have guided access to this incredible terrain through Homewood’s Snowcat Adventures throughout the remainder of the season as conditions permit.”

Homewood Snowcat Adventures are led by experienced backcountry guides with a focus on safety, fun and adventure. The maximum group size is capped at 10 people to ensure plenty of powder runs for everyone, with all participants required to be advanced skiers or snowboarders. Private group tours for intermediate skiers and snowboarders can be arranged in advance with a full buyout.

All day packages with Homewood Snowcat Adventures, which includes both lift access at Homewood Resort as well as the snowcat tour, are available for $399 per person, per day. Also included are the required backcountry backpack, shovel, avalanche beacon, and probe, as well as professional instruction related to mountain safety practices.
