Yah, so i'm cheap. i figure though, the cheaper my lift tickets, the
more times i can go. So far, i personally have gotten a
Vertical Plus membership from
Sierra-At-Tahoe, and a Tahoe Card.

AAA
- Randy Kahn told me that Homewood does not honor the AAA discount
on holidays or weekends. But the good news is, Mt. Rose offers $5 to
AAA members on all-day tickets.
-
Mark Bixby, of skisocal.org sez:
AAA discounts of about $5 at Ski Homewood (perhaps other places as
well, always ask before paying full price).
-
Just lodging: Horizon Casino (South Lake Tahoe): $29.50 per person, double
occupancy. No lift ticket. Expires 12/17/98. Requires AAA membership.
Bay Area Ski Bus
-
Here's a cool idea: You drive to your local BART station or nearby
mall at 4:00am, toss your board into a bus, and sleep on the way up
to the slopes with no worries about having to drive, keeping the
driver awake, or traffic. When you get there, you ride like a madman
(or woman) because you know that _you_ don't have to drive back (or
keep the driver awake), or deal with traffic. Well, it sounds cool to
me, anyways. And $69 (if pre-purchased 10-days before trip, $74 if
not) includes the ride _and_ the lift ticket (+$5 for Squaw). Here's
the dates and resorts that the
Bay Area Ski Bus
goes to. i just wish they picked up somewhere closer to Sunnyvale. :-P
Well, the Demo Active bus does. :-} (And hey,
this information is also on my easy-to-read
calendar.
12/19 - Kirkwood, 1/9 - Sierra-at-Tahoe,
1/16 - Kirkwood, 1/23 - Northstar,
1/30 - Sierra-at-Tahoe, 2/6 - Squaw Valley,
2/10 - Sugar Bowl, 2/20 - Northstar,
2/27 - Kirkwood, 3/6 - Squaw Valley,
3/10 - Sugar Bowl & Royal Gorge, 3/13 - Sugar Bowl
& Royal Gorge, 3/20 - Northstar, 3/27 - Kirkwood,
4/10 - Sierra-at-Tahoe, 4/17 - Kirkwood
Demo Active Sports
- My local ski/snowboard shop, Demo Active Sports (4500 El Camino
Real, Los Altos - 650/917-8043) pre-sells some vouchers and tickets.
(And you can also pick up the Value Season vouchers there for
Northstar and
Sierra-At-Tahoe, as well as the
POWDR card.)
Here's the details on the tickets/vouchers that they sell at the shop:
- Kirkwood: $40 (regularly $45)
- Sugar Bowl: $40 (regularly $45)
Oh, and the guy i talked to said they were hoping to get Alpine
tickets too.
- Road Trips.
A very cool deal! $75 (or so) pays for your ride and a full-day ticket
to various resorts on various dates:
12/5 - Sierra-at-Tahoe, 12/6 - Kirkwood,
1/9 - Squaw Valley, 1/24 - Kirkwood,
2/6 - Sugar Bowl, 2/27 - Alpine Meadows,
3/7 - Squaw Valley, 3/20 - Kirkwood
These are also listed in the new
calendar section.
Excellence in Education - Ski for Schools
-
Tahoe resorts reduce their prices and and the money benefits
local schools. You have to pre-buy them at Porter's Ski Shops or
Sierra West Bank in Truckee. If you have a friend in Tahoe that
can buy 'em, have them do it soon. They apparently go on sale a week
or two before the date, and they go fast, so if you're going to be up
there, you might want to keep that in mind, and plan on dropping by
Porter's to grab a few. Here's the dates/places: 12/19/98 - Squaw - $20,
1/3/99 - Homewood - $15, 3/20/99 - Sugar Bowl - $15.

I went to a couple of these last year, two different resorts.
Attention Boarders and Skiers! Our first Snow Express Bus goes on sale
this Saturday (12/5/98) starting at 11 a.m. at Folsom Bike & Ski (317 Natoma St.
in Folsom - 916/985-3244). Just $19.98 for bus transportation and lift
ticket to Sugar Bowl on January 16th while supplies last!
Helm of Sun Valley - San Mateo
-
Hey, i happened to drop by Helm of Sun Valley (the San Mateo branch -
333 N. Amphlett Blvd. - 650/344-2711), and found out that they offer
discounted lift tickets for a couple of different places.
- Bear Valley - $28 (regularly $35)
- Dodge Ridge (Weekend/Holiday) - $35 (regularly $39)
- Homewood - $28 (regularly $36)
- Squaw Valley USA - $43 (regularly $49)
- Sugar Bowl - $38 (regularly $45)
Helm of Sun Valley - San Jose
-
Allan Moluf dropped me a line to tell me that the San Jose branch
claims to not be connected to the San Mateo store. But they _do_ carry
the same $28 lift tickets for Bear Valley (regularly $35).
They're located at 1111 Saratoga, and you can call them at
408/996-7669.
HP
-
Work at Hewlett-Packard? Got friends who do? Ask them to hit
their internal web page and look for discount tickets to the
following resorts. You (and they) can save anywhere from $6-7 per
ticket. [Tip: You can buy them directly from certain Longs Drugs,
if you bring your HP ID or whatever it is.]
- Homewood - $28 (regularly $36) (not yet available at either Longs i called)
- Kirkwood - $38 (regularly $45)
- Northstar - $39 (regularly $48)
- Sierra-At-Tahoe - $39 (regularly $45)
- Sugar Bowl - $39 (regularly $45)
Last year, the Northstar/Sierra-At-Tahoe "voucher" also worked as a
beginner's package ticket. Need to find out whether they also work
the same way this year. (Rentals, lesson and lift ticket for the
beginner lifts. Normally $54 at Northstar, $45-55 at Sierra-At-Tahoe.
That's cheap!)
KSJO Mountain Madness '99 Bus
-
Over at Any Mountain last night, they had some flyers for the KSJO Ski
bus. Package includes round-trip bus ride and a full-day lift ticket.
- Sat., 1/16/99 - Heavenly - $65
- Sat., 1/30/99 - Heavenly - $65
- Sat., 2/13/99 - Bear Valley - $45
- Sat., 2/27/99 - Heavenly - $65
- Sat., 3/13/99 - Bear Valley - $45
- Sat., 3/27/99 - Kirkwood - $60
Inn at Truckee
-
We stayed at the Inn at
Truckee this past weekend, and i noticed that they sell lift
tickets there at some pretty good discounted prices:
- Sugar Bowl - $39 (save $6)
- Northstar - $41 (save $7)
- Squaw - $43 (save $6)
- Alpine - $43 (save $5)
i think you have to be staying there to get those prices, but it's
a nice reasonable place, clean rooms, and woohoo, a sauna and a
jacuzzi!
Lakeside Inn and Casino
-
Randy Kahn also told me about these discounted lift tickets that you
can purchase at the gift shop in the Lakeside Inn and Casino (South
Lake Tahoe). (So presumably you don't need to be a guest? Wow!)
- Kirkwood - $39 (save $6)
- Squaw Valley - $42 (save $7)
- Sierra-at-Tahoe - $37 (save $8)
- Heavenly - $49 (save a whopping $3)
As usual, Heavenly is being stingy with the discounts, but _wow_,
that Sierra-at-Tahoe price is even cheaper than if you have a
Vertical Plus membership! Thanks Randy!
Ski Lake Tahoe
-
The Ski Lake Tahoe Five-Day Interchangeable Ticket is valid at
six resorts in the Lake Tahoe region. $245 gives you 5 days at
Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Heavenly, Northstar-at-Tahoe,
and Squaw Valley. You should be able to purchase it at the ticket
window of any of those resorts _except_ Heavenly, where it is
available at a cheaper price as part of their lodging packages (call
702/586-7000 for more info). (And actually, it only works out to
$49/day, which isn't _that_ great of a deal. :-P)
Ski Tahoe North
-
The Ski Tahoe North Interchangeable Ticket, not to be confused with the
Ski Lake Tahoe Ticket, offers skiing at
_seven_ different North Lake Tahoe resorts - Alpine Meadows,
Northstar-At-Tahoe, Squaw Valley, Sugar Bowl, Diamond Peak, Mt. Rose*,
and Ski Homewood*. (* means that it's good for two-for-one skiing at
those resorts.) If you do not wish to ski a day, you may use the
voucher for a $30 meal credit at participating restaurants. They
offer the pass for 3 days - $138, 4 days - $184, 5 days - $230, and 6
days - $276. For more information (and to order?), call the North Lake
Tahoe Resort Association at 800/824-6348. (This only works
out to $46/day, which isn't such a great deal either. :-P)
skiticket.com
- Well, as you might guess from the name, this is a site that
sells ski tickets. But they get some pretty sweet corporate
discounts. The only catch: your company has to sign-up with them.
Now, it doesn't cost you or your company anything, and in addition
to lift ticket discounts, they also have discounts on movie tickets
too. Anyways, the deals on lift tickets aren't bad:
- Alpine - $42 (save $6)
- Diamond Peak - $33 (save $5)
- Homewood - $30 (save $5)
- Kirkwood - $40 (save $5)
- Northstar - $41 (save $7)
- Sierra-At-Tahoe - $41 (save $4)
- Sugar Bowl - $40 (save $5)
Snowfest Gold Ticket
-
Sorry, i forgot to put the phone number before, but i just called,
and they are now (10/13/98) SOLD OUT!
Snowfest Gold Ticket (530/583-7625) is good for 35 days of mid-week skiing at
North Lake Tahoe and Donner Summit resorts. Fully transferrable ticket,
priced at $350, through Oct. 1, and $399 after. Only 250 of these
tickets are available. (i called and got the full info faxed
to me. It's actually only _23_ mid-week days at downhill resorts, the
other 12 are only good for cross-country. Other info: you can share
it with friends. It's basically a card with punchable days, usually 2
days at each resort. You _can_ use both days for two people on the
same day. There are some holiday black-out periods. Oh, and you can
use it the weekend days of Snowfest, Mar. 5-14, 1999.)
Tahoe Card
-
You can now get a 25% discount (Sun.-Thurs., non-holiday) at the
Inn at Truckee with a Tahoe Card.
Also 20% off of Northstar
lodging (Sun.-Thurs., non-holiday). It already gets you $20
off Sun.-Thurs. (reg. $59) at the Lakeside Inn and Casino (South
Lake Tahoe), and $19 rooms (Sun.-Thurs.) at the Thunderchief Motel
(also SLT.) But argh, i _don't_ do lodging, i said!
The card provides:
- From Any Mountain: 1 free ski/snowboard tune up -or- 1 free 2 day rental
package as well as 10% off all merchandise.
- From Alpine Meadows: The Card works like the
POWDR Card for $18 off lift tickets on
selected days. (Regularly $48)
- From Homewood: $11 discounts on lift tickets everyday! (Regularly $36)
[STUDENT ID REQUIRED]
- From Sierra: $10 off all day lift tickets everyday except Saturdays.
(Regularly $45)
- From Northstar: 50% off Vertical Plus
Membership (regularly $49), as well as Free
Vertical Value membership.
- From Sugar Bowl: Free membership in Sugar Bowl's
Adventure Advantage
Program. ($3 off all day lift tickets, and ski 4, 5th time is free.)
Thunderchief Motel
-
Welp. i'm typing this from here at the Thunderchief Motel, so at
least you know they have working phones and electricity. :-} Nah,
it's not bad, for what it is, which is basically, a cheap room.
($20+tax for 2 people/1 queen bed, $25+tax for 2 people/2 doubles.)
i noticed that they too sell "discounted" lift tickets. Weyll...
sure, they're a _little_ cheaper, but you really should have bought
your Heav/Sierra tix at Wells Fargo, and gotten the Subway Kirkwood
coupon. But well, if you forgot, and you're staying here, here's the
uh, "discounts.":
- Heavenly - $51 (save $1)
- Sierra-At-Tahoe - $43 (save $2)
- Kirkwood - $44 (save $1)
[Sorry for the sarcasm, but gee whiz, $1 and $2?? And the woman at the
front desk was acting as if these were the deals of the century. Heh.
Actually, it was kind of endearing. :-}]
Wells Fargo - Snow Sport Express
Here's the deals that you'll be able to get (starting
12/7/98, ending 4/10/99) at participating Wells Fargo ATMs.
You can use any ATM card at these Wells Fargo ATMs, and buy vouchers
straight from the machine. There's no surcharge from Wells Fargo,
but you might get charged a POS usage fee by your own bank.
(Basically it's like using your ATM card at a store or restaurant.)
Looking
for an ATM that sells the tickets? Well, you won't find
any in Placerville, but this handy-dandy
ATM finder will show you
where you _can_ get 'em.
